How to edit text in a screenshot for docs and mockups

Edit a button label or headline in a screenshot. Learn when to use a fresh capture, how to prepare a PNG, and what to check before publishing.

You can edit text in a screenshot by uploading the image, entering its original label and the replacement, and reviewing the result. This is useful for screenshots of your own product or for honest design mockups when the editable screen is not readily available.

When editing a screenshot saves time

An onboarding headline may change after screenshots have been exported. A help center may still show a navigation label from the previous release. A designer may need to test whether a longer button label fits a concept screen. In each case, the image already exists and only a small amount of wording needs attention.

The important distinction is whether the screen must document a real state. If the product can be opened and the correct state reached, take a fresh screenshot. Editing the pixels is a practical option for an exported design, a draft or a screenshot that would be difficult to reconstruct.

Choose the cleanest screenshot

PNG is a useful source for sharp UI captures because its lossless encoding avoids JPEG compression artifacts around small characters. JPG and WebP are also accepted, provided the upload is no larger than 10 MB. If the only copy was sent through a chat app, look for the original capture first.

Keep the whole screen in view if surrounding details are important. The editor needs a clear visual reference for the label, and the result should be checked for unexpected changes to icons, layout and status information.

How to edit text in a screenshot

  1. Open the screenshot text editor and upload your JPG, PNG or WebP.
  2. Type the current label or sentence exactly as it appears, including capitalization and punctuation.
  3. Enter the new wording. For separate elements, add another original and replacement pair; up to five pairs can be included in one edit.
  4. Sign in with Google and start the edit. A first account receives one free credit; each submitted image uses one credit.
  5. Compare the original and edited image at full size, then download the result.

A short replacement is more likely to fit an existing button or heading. If the replacement is much longer, the model may reduce or rearrange text, so check the line break and neighboring UI carefully.

What to check before publishing

  • Wording: Verify every character, number, punctuation mark and capitalization.
  • Layout: Inspect button edges, icons, spacing and any text that should not have changed.
  • Accuracy: The screenshot must represent the actual product when used as documentation or a store listing. Label a concept as a mockup when it is not a live interface.
  • Size: The model aims to retain framing and aspect ratio, but the output dimensions may differ. Check your destination's dimensions before upload.
  • Format: The downloaded extension follows the generated image, so confirm it meets your publishing workflow's format requirements.

When translation is the actual job

If the purpose is to localize all visible text, use translate text in image and select one target language for that edit. A fluent reviewer should check the result, especially product names and numbers. For a product that already supports the language, recapturing the real localized interface is often the better way to show its actual state.

What cannot be edited

Do not alter chat, email, payment, bank-balance or account screenshots to make them appear to prove something that did not happen. The editor is for images you own or are licensed to edit, including honest product documentation and design mockups. Read the acceptable use policy for details.

Frequently asked questions

Can I edit text in a PNG screenshot?

Yes. Upload a PNG up to 10 MB, enter the existing and replacement text, and inspect the downloaded image. JPG and WebP are also supported.

Is editing screenshot text free?

The first Google sign-in grants one free credit. One image edit uses one credit, and additional credits are sold in one-time packs. A failed edit returns its credit.

Will an edited screenshot remain exactly the same size?

The editor asks the model to preserve framing and aspect ratio, but does not guarantee the original pixel dimensions. Check the result before submitting it to a store or inserting it into a fixed-size layout.
